Project Details

Via competitive tender, APB Group Ltd were awarded Network Rail London North-West Region (North) Package 626, which comprised of six bridge refurbishments

OB83 is comprised of riveted single span main girders, with brickwork abutments and wingwalls. An 18” diameter gas main is attached to the south parapet. Concrete-reinforced brickwork jack arches span between wrought iron cross girders to form the 14.6m clear span main deck. The main girder forms the parapet on both sides of the road. The bridge is located on the London Euston to Crewe (LEC1) overhead electrified West Coast Main Line.

The scope of work included:

·          De-vegetation and graffiti removal
·          Access scaffold and encapsulation during short T3 Possessions and Isolations
·          20m2 Mechanical preparation and painting of soffit steelwork
·          215m2 Grit-blasting and painting of main girders (including work during full and half road closures)
·          Brickwork repairs to bridge abutments and wingwalls

The temporary access scaffold was earth-bonded, and was required to meet strict static electrical clearances to allow weekday usage without isolations. It also allowed the grit-blasting and painting works to be undertaken during the weekday in a controlled environment.

Significant liaison was required with National Grid to ensure work was undertaken adjacent to their live service safely and within the programme constraints. A painting system was selected to achieve a service life of minimum 25 years.
